Some memories of Jeremy

Jeremy is one guy I get quite comfortable when he came in. He's my junior and one that pick up rowing very quickly and gain the trust of the coach ever since the first race. If memory did not fail me, it'll be Yee Sang, Jeremy and than follow by me for the front rower. We always help each other out since he's like sitting so close to me.

After training, people like Daren, Reuben, Zhikun, Yee Sang, Jackson and I would go to the Mr Bean for beancurd before heading home. It's like a standard protocol for us to have something after training before going back home. The only pity is that I did not get to be very close to him. We only talk during training. But having some memories with him is better than nothing.

It is only through his friends that I get to know him better. The funny way he laugh and his pretense to know everything other people is talking about. Actually, now then did I realise all the while I have been "smoke" by him. Can't blame me since he is such a natural actor. Haha... but ok la, not all people can have the chance to know him in person.

At least he leave with his close friends and they can take care of each other up there. I'm going to burn all my notes for him since he doesn't like studying very much. *evil smile

Finally exam over

Its really so fortunate for coming out of this tough period with exam and the departure all at the same time. It's really lucky I got friends that are so helpful during this period. Leonghui, thanks for all the tips you gave me. Very very accurate.

For many who doesn't know, I never really study for my last paper Advance Network. It is only after 7pm yesterday then I start flipping my notes. I studied all the way till 0430 before I get some wink. 0600 I woke up to prepare to leave for school. My paper were held at 0900. I am so dead tired and it's really a miracle that the question comes out to be what Leonghui had predicted. Lucky I study base on his tips else I'm really done for it.

As usual, my mind can't get off thinking about Reuben. I drew strength from him as he would want me to do well too. 2 hours later and I'm a free man.... Will have a good night sleep tonight. Just wondering if Boon San is alive, will we met in the StanChart Run? His brother said he was suppose to compete for the full marathon category too....

Someone told me the 7th day is suppose for the ***** to come back to give dreams to the one he missed, but hor Reuben is a Christian leh. LOL... It ain't a bad thing if he come back to give me dreams, at least I can get to spend some time with him. But he gonna try very hard cos it's been months since I last had a dream.

More about Boon San

To be frank, I never like him at all. Maybe because I'm always his target board and always bullied by him. Haha actually sometimes I quite enjoy argue with him. He's my senior and the most talkative of them all. But being straight means that he is also in other people range too. Sometimes errrr, it seems like every time, he would make scant remarks of other people and most of the time, I really wanna pull my hair listening to his comments.

We like to call him "Hotdog" because of his lips. His senior, his batch and my batch all call him that. He doesn't mind and he seems to be in love with this nick. However, there are other side of him that people don't know. He cares for the team very much. He trained hard and I remembered during the crisis period in the team and he is the one to comfort me with his words.

Even though he offended many people with his words but somehow I understand why. It is maybe his way of being a friend. During his wake, the first thing his mom asked me is if he's a naughty boy. In fact, she is smiling at it. She told me Boon San is very quiet at home and his brother would be so strict to him that he would cane him again and again. His brother is quite a tough guy by the looks of it. It became so bad that even his grandma before her death would ask his brother not to beat him again. He will grow up right. But hey, to someone that took 8 yrs for primary school and 5 for secondary school and still able to get a second class honors is an achievement! In fact, its like a miracle to me. His brother played a very big part in guiding him to finish his study and I absolutely salute him for it.

Kinda strange for a person so naughty at school but so quiet at home. His rowdy acts did not appeal to many others but hey, I would like to know the quiet side of him. Being able to sit down with him and chat about future, about career and especially about rowing.

Reu final day with us

At Reu's wake
Rush back to Reuben place to be ready for his final day with us. I was talking to Melvin(my junior in nyp) and find that Reuben really had the ability to pass his passion for the sport to other people. It is just so amazing to hear of the stories of how Reu help him to continue rowing. I tried bringing my notes over but never had the mood to study for it.

On way to crematorium
At around 1130, his parents came down. They were so sad about it especially his mother and grandmother. And uncle Freddie is the source of strength for me when I see him having to take care of the both of them when in such a terrible mood. I would have broke down long ago if I was in his shoe.

The national rowers carried his coffin to the van. Everyone just broke down seeing his family so distraught for Reuben to leave. Darren was soooo soooo sad. He is also very close to Reuben and as for those who don't know. Reuben delayed his NS to help out with the team(he didn't told me about it and I think he just want to shoulder all the responsibility of keeping the team there). Melvin was saying to me that at a point of time, there's only 5 of them in the team left(guess it's the senior), they were bonded like brothers. Darren broke down time and time again and I can see the impact of Reuben departure.

Crematorium
At the crematorium, we hear speeches from the minister and the deceases friends and family members. Uncle Freddy speech is inspiring and playful. Just like what Reu use to be. I think all of his close friends realised uncle was wearing Reu coin pouch and watch. He really touch our heart with the words he said. The captain of the team was the final speaker and I really really feel so much for him. He is strong to be able to make speeches for his friends. A really really strong man. I don't think I will be able to do what he is doing. Stories of Boon San from his brother really change my whole perception of him. Just that I didn't get to see this side of him. Quite a pity.

Hall 2
We proceed to hall 2 to sing and pray for Reu. Even though, I'm not a Christian. I still go along with it, trying to sing as beautiful as I can for him. We gave flowers to Reu after that and I tell him that I will meet him up there regardless of any race we were. Cos I believe the one up there is one that unite the whole world. He will tell me stories of his adventures up there and I will tell him mine. I had to start living seriously else I won't have any interesting stories to tell him.

At the viewing hall
Every one was crying on and off for Reu. Especially when his family members came. It breaks everyone heart to see his grandma and mom so distraught. His father is really a pillar of strength to be able to encourage everyone at the moment. Everyone just broke down seeing the process. Sigh... Reu has chose to leave us sooo sad. Darren was in a very bad shape as well as Jane and the other guys. Even a boy as young as 6-7 was crying.

How could he be doing this to all his friends and family members. I wasn't sad instead I felt so peaceful. Seriously I don't understand why. But I tell myself that I need to be as strong as Reu. He wouldn't want us to be so sad. He want us to be happy. Time and time again, I remember of his cheeky smile

The aftermath
We boarded the bus and head back to Bishan. I had lunch with some of his close friends at Reu favourite coffee shop Kim San Leng for chicken rice. Reu is always saying , "Chicken is good, chicken is good and pork is bad cos it eat any ****." Well it's just to bad that there's no chicken at that point of time and had to settle for other food.

We made a promise to spend some time with his parents once in a while to accompany them. I also made arrangement with Thomas and Yani to walk around our training places in Kallang after our StanChart marathon. Still a wonder though will our body be able to take it.

Back Home Lyrics By Reuben Kee

There's a place that you will always know
It is where your heart knows it's home
And if you need to run from trouble or despair
It is where to go
Run back home

I went faraway to see the world alone
To places in my dreams
But the best dreams came when I was dreaming them at home

Every bird sees the sky as its home
To just fly and be free is a joy
Each night I have dreamt of being free to fly
But I've always known
The sky is not home

I went far away to see the world alone
To places in my dreams
But the best dream came
When I was dreaming them at home
The best dreams came
When I was dreaming them at home
Back Home

Special thanks to Lyuina Lee for the lyrics.

Attending Reuben Wake

After going through the service for Reuben wake yesterday night, it is just heart-wrenching to see all people cried for him especially his family members. After hearing what his family talk about him, how I really hope to have get to know him in person earlier. 相逢恨晚 .

I actually thought my tears had dried but it was not to be. It's so emotional to get to see Reuben again. I really love his smile and it was just 2 months back since I last saw him. Sigh... I really miss him very very much.

His mom, Patsy, recounts stories of Reu childhood. My heart goes all out to salute this friend of mine. I don't know that he's a genius!!! He got to play piano at the age of 2 without any guidance. At the age of 4, he was discovered to compose song of his own. His mom got so shock at it that she decided to send him to music school to further this talent. Little did she know that both her children(Shimona and Reuben) did not like having musical lesson. But I have to applaud her mom for the way she handles her kid. I think she gives them the space to grow and not to force them unlike most parents nowadays. It's really also amazing for him to hold his mother to shopping at the age of 23. It just put me in shame of what I have done to love my family. But it is just fortunate for me that time is still by my side for repay what I've owe them for raising me up.

His father has got quite a humor. I guess Reuben inherit this trait from his father. As a father, I understand how he feels and how much loves he had for his child. I guessed it will be the same for me if I find that my children is soooo much closer to his wife.

As for Shimona, I really love her voice. it made some of the people so emotional that they broke down crying. Reuben sent me her song a few years ago too. Kinda hard for siblings to send song of their bro/sis to his friend. After listening to her stories and talking to her in person, I really wish I had Reuben as my brother. He's just very very special to go all out to enjoy times with sister. I also laughed at the quarrel Reuben and his sister got involved in.

It really just touch my heart to hear all the stories from his family members of the personal side of Reuben. To me , he's just to humble. When he's the captain of Safsa, he did not tell me. When he went for Mr Singapore, he did not tell me. It is only after a few months that he let it slipped out of his mouth. Just wondering if he scared that I'm too loud-mouth to tell everyone about it. Just that this time, I will never know the answer.

The Kee family is really one close-knitted family and it is really sad that they have lost their only son. And for all of us, a very special friend that will always stay in our heart. Sometimes, I'm just overwhelmed with sadness but maybe like what the pastor said, I am only seeing the small picture.

Friends of Reuben please take note

For people who know Reuben in person, please write an email to his father Freddie at freddiek@singnet.com.sg to share with him the meaningful experiences you had with Reuben.

Letter to Reuben

Dear Reuben,

Hope you're fine up there. Having to wake up to the tune of Back Home is really refreshing. I'm serious! I think this song is on par with Canon In D, my favorite song for many many years. Haha, I can see the smirk on your face when you read this.

Do not worry for me cos I will take good care of myself. The best way to remember you is to continue to live the best of my life =) Hopefully, Boon San and Jeremy accompanying you well. Tell them that they are missed too. Members of NYP dragonboat will be there to visit them.

I'm making an effort to market your music to the blogosphere so that everyone can embed their song on their blog. Kinda hard but I will try to get as many people to put it k? Your music is so beautiful that I'm sure there's many to appreciate it. Contact someone from SPH to put your music on their home page. Lets keep our finger cross. I'll help to keep your site up so don't worry. Everything is taken care of. Will be seeing you in person later. Remember to give me the smile you usually do.

I will contact Yee Sang for the music video thingy. I'm sure he will come out with something good. I'm sure he can cos he's your senior =)

p.s: Your facebook group is 215 members strong all within a single day. That's the fastest growing group I ever witness. I'm sure you're glad to have so many friends who really care about you.

Clarify Misconception On Dragonboat

This is in regard with Jean post on the issue of life jacket. But in life, things may not be as simple as it is. I perfectly understand why they choose not to wear as a ex-dragonboater myself. In high performance sports like dragonboat, you cannot have anything to hold you back. Life jacket is one thing that is really irritating and hinder your movement. I totally agree life jacket must be worn. Most of the race ended neck to neck(those without NJC joining) and very often you need a viewcam to decide the eventual winner. A 5% drop in performance means most likely you will lose the race. However, I must say the authorities must enforce it if not such accident will continue to happen.

As a super-safety conscious person myself, I would also be forced by the circumstances not to wear it. Being a rower, winning is everything. Can you imagine the anguish of them going through 4-5 times of grueling training per week and not to get anything back after the race?

Let me clear some of the misconception of the sport itself.

Miconception 1: Dragonboat is a exercise that use only arm power
Dragonboat uses legs to kick also and everytime after the race, I could feel my legs getting soft and jelly. Dragonboating uses lots of cardio too. That's why you see them often running around. It's a sport that requires you to have a great cardio and arm power to excel in it.

Misconception 2: Dragonboat sinks easily
I don't know what these people are really thinking about but dragonboat is really stable as it's base is wide enough. Even if you want to overturn it, it would need a lot of team effort to do it. For my three years as a rowers, I have not experience this myself. I only witness this during the dragonboat race when boats collide. That is only when boats collide.

Misconception 3: You need to be a swimmer to join this sport
Throughout my 3 years as a rower, there's so many non-swimmers I see participating in this sport. I can only keep my head barely afloat until my third year there. In other words, I mean my swimming sucks.

Misconception 4: Life jacket is a must
I remembered clearly that it is only halfway through my second year that SDBA enforce every rower to wear the jacket. It is not a must to wear jacket and wearing jacket makes rowing very uncomfy and prone to abrasion at the armpit area.

Once agin, I hope I have done nothing to offend Jean. Jean is my friend and I owe her many favor including getting her to put Reuben's Back Home music on her blog. I really appreciate her kindness for this.

I will be visiting them later in noon. I'm lost for words on what to say to them.

In honour of Reuben Kee

To be clear first, I'm not to gain any publicity. This will be a post in case I forgot anything about you. I know your still there with us.

People say man don't cry, boys do. But while writing this post now, I'm crying my heart out. It's been so terrible out there at orchard while waiting for your news. And my heart just sunk after knowing the truth.

Reuben, you are one that I would consider to be my best best friend of all time. I consider that our friendship to last till we're ripe old age.

I met you in NYP when you join dragon boat as a freshman and the only survivor for that semester. I don't remember how I get to know you but somehow we click very well together. Even though, I'm more senior than you, but right after the first semester, you are more than a hi-bye friend to me. You're someone that I can trust, someone I can freely talk to without being laughed at. I guess we are of the same kind. Kind and shy and sensitive new age guy.

I'm always envy by the fact that you're tall, strong and talented. Someone I see with very bright future. Optimistic and relax to be around with. And of cos your piano skill where you would always play FF7 battle song and said it's soooo coool. You seldom show your pressure and always taking things in stride.

I still remembered the days where we train under the hot sun rowing from end to end of Kallang Basin and after the training, we would always went for a meal at Beach Road to replenish fuel for our body.

I still remembered the time where I always scoff at you spending more than $9 worth of food for a single meal.

I still remembered the times where we would get so upset for not winning the race.

I still remembered the times where we spend 5 times a week in gym after the race to get to tip-top shape in order to win the next one.

I still remembered of the times we swim together where you will lap me for breast stroke and I lap you for free style.

I still remembered you are the one that introduce me to Prince of Tennis and got me hook to it ever since.

I remembered the time where you wanted to watch Saw3 instead of James Bond and you ended up feeling so gross over all the scene.

I remembered that I laugh out at your preference for chicken over pork because pig just eat any ****. And the famous chicken rice stall in Bishan Interchange that never fails to win you over.

I remembered you made me wait so long in orchard that you feel so bad about it.

I remember....

I hope my memory can serve me better so that I can remember all the times we are together.

And if i have the chance to turn back time, I'd turn down all my other appointment just to meet up with you. I would watch 881 with you. I would reconsidering your challenge to run together in order to spend time with you. I would join Battle Station after you invited me so many times and not wait after exams. I would pick up basketball again so as to team up with you. I would put my ego aside and get Caroline out for a gathering so that we 3 good friends can meet for a chit chat. I would really hope to have the chance to make a good phone call with you and wish you well before you leave for Cambodia.

I learn a lot of things from you. You've showed me one needs to do something that one is passionate about. You showed me that one can have fun and work hard at the same time; when you're dota-ing, dragonboating, playing basketball and earning a living as a freelancer all at the same time. You also showed me to be there when your friend needs you.

Seriously, I still cannot accept the fact that you have leave us. How can you do that when you still haven't return my book and still owe me a lunch and ....

But no matter what, I will still remember you as my friend. Even though 6 years of friendship is too short, but I enjoyed every moment with you and that is what it really matter.

Had 3 missing friends in a day

Just found out Jeremy and Boon San is also in the list. Never really expect this thing to happen. They're 3 tough guys and I still believe they're somewhere lost in a island. Can't think of anything else right now... Just hope for a quiet place to cool down and prepare mentally to study...

Lost for words. Hope he's still alive

I don't know what to say. Just wonder why such things should happen to such a nice nice guy. I wanted to meet him up after my papers and this thing happen to him. Only thing I can do now is to pray for his safety.

Reuben is such a musically talented guy. Once a Mr Singapore and highly sought after for his musical talent. Thinking back, I would really want to spend more time with him....

Extracted from CNA

SINGAPORE: Relatives of five young men missing in Cambodia in a dragon boating accident have arrived in Phnom Penh.

They arrived on Saturday evening and were taken to the accident site by the Singapore Ambassador to Cambodia.

It was dark, though, by the time they went on the river. They were then given an hour-long briefing during which emotions ran high.

Accompanying the 13 family members are three psychologists - one from the Ministry of Health, another from the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports and a third from the Institute of Mental Health.

The five missing men are all members of the new national dragon boat team that was formed about a year ago.

They are 23-year-old Reuben Kee En Rui, 31-year-old Stephen Loh Soon Ann, 24-year-old Jeremy Goh Tze Xiong, 27-year-old Poh Boon San and 20-year-old Chee Wei Cheng.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has written to the president of the Dragon Boating Association, Kwek Siew Jin, to convey his deep sympathies for the five missing Singaporeans.

Mr Kwek is currently in Phnom Penh with the family members of the missing men.

Mr Lee said he was saddened to learn of the accident, adding that it was a trying time for all, especially for the family members.

He said the Singapore government is in touch with the Cambodian authorities and providing them with the necessary help.

Mr Lee added that the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) had deployed a team from the Naval Diving Unit on Saturday afternoon to assist in search and rescue efforts.

Cambodia's Prime Minister Hun Sen had also written to Mr Lee to assure him of his country's full support for the search operations and to express his sorrow and sympathy.

A Foreign Affairs Ministry statement said PM Hun Sen informed PM Lee that the relevant Cambodian authorities including the Phnom Penh Municipality, the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of Interior and the National Committee for Disaster Management are continuing with their efforts in the search for those still unaccounted for.

Mr Lee asked Mr Kwek to convey his deepest sympathies to the family members who have been briefed on the ongoing search and rescue efforts, adding that he wished them comfort and strength during this extremely difficult period.

The accident, which happened on Friday at about 4.20pm, was caught on camera by a MediaCorp viewer Joey Paraiso who was in Phnom Penh to watch the annual race.

The boat capsized as the 22 men were rowing back to the starting line at the end of the 1.5-kilometre Cambodia-ASEAN Traditional Boat Race.

Apparently, it was swept by a sudden wave and hit a pontoon, causing the boat to overturn.

Reports say the rowers were not wearing life jackets when the accident happened.

Earlier, rescue divers said it was a challenge to find the missing dragon boaters.

In Singapore, Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports, Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, said he was distressed when he heard about the accident.

He added: "Right now our priorities are to find them, to provide comfort to the family members and then find out exactly what happened and then take stock of the situation. We have a good dragon boat team with strong interest among young Singaporeans and we do regularly send teams overseas to participate in this and that's why this becomes even more shocking and distressing."

He added that the other priority is to ensure the safety of the other 17 Singaporeans who were rescued.

Dr Balakrishnan said: "We obviously will want to bring them back as soon as possible. I'm sure they want to get back here as well but our priority is to make sure they have all received full treatment and that their conditions have stabilised before we bring them back."

The Ministry says Singaporeans who are concerned about relatives and friends in Cambodia participating in the event can contact the Foreign Affairs Ministry.

Starting a new day ahead

After a good night sleep, I start my day with a run. Sounds quite army right. No choice la. Thinking ahead, full marathon is only like a week ahead. My last training is still stuck at 20km and I still got exam to prepare. Last paper on Friday. Think I'm in deep sh**. My plan will be to run 2 times a day and do static to strengthen my thigh and calf. These are the 2 most distressed area for long distance runner. Hopefully, I will get somewhat ready it on Sunday.

Still, I haven't got any news of my friend. It just makes me nervous if my prediction is correct. Come back sound and safe and I'll give you a good treat k?

Meanwhile, I should be back to study for Advance Network. Hope to finish at least 4 chapters of Advance Network together with Computer Architecture. Time is really short for exam preparation.

Will be down in town for the video shoot for Jean. Hopefully, it will be quick and fun and memorable. It should be because I'm in the midst of exam =)

5 Singaporeans missing in Cambodian boat race mishap

After watching this news from TV5, it got me real scared. Hopefully my friend is not involved in it. I still remember that he's not able to swim that well since poly days.

I'm still not able to reach his phone. From his blog, found out the very last post is 4 days ago. Really praying for him right now. Hey Reuben, give me a call or what to let me know your safe and sound k?

Extract from Straits Times
FIVE Singaporeans are missing feared drowned and 17 others have been hospitalised after their boat capsised on Friday during Cambodia's annual water festival river races, officials said.

The mishap occurred late in the afternoon on the first day of races, which draws millions, mostly spectators and holiday-makers, to the capital Phnom Penh, police chief Touch Naruth told reporters.

Nhim Vanda of Cambodia's National Disaster Management Committee said the accident happened as the boat tried to dock after racing.

'Five of the 22 crew members are missing after their boat sunk,' he said.

More than 440 boats are entered in this year's races, including a number crewed by foreigners.

All 10 Association of Southeast Asian Nation (Asean) countries have boats competing.

Deputy Prime Minister Sar Kheng was supervising rescue efforts late Friday, officials said.

Accidents are common during the boat races, which involve long, thin 'dragon boats' crewed by as many as 70 rowers which compete against each other in the sometimes choppy waters in front of Phnom Penh's royal palace. -- AFP

Studying Studying Studying

Still not able to figure out some of the tutorial question from Computer Architecture. It is just amazing that I'm not able to figure out the question marks at that point of time and only to confuse myself when the paper is so near. Hopefully there's nothing wrong with me =)

Special thanks to Zolene for traveling all the way down to study together. It's been great to study with you for the past few days. Haha it's your last semester in school so jiayou!!!

Been down in town for the past few days BUT I've not able to enjoy myself yet. Hopefully next week pass soon.

Will be heading down to Orchard again specially for Jean. Helping her as extras for the video making. She needs one gal. Any volunteers? Call me if you're keen on it.

Meanwhile, it's time to go back to books. Jiayou!

Thoughts for the week

For the past few days, I've been camping in NYP to study. It just makes more much more relax studying in there. Maybe the students ain't that pressured. You can always see them playing games with their laptops. Those were the days, when I'm really performing really well for studies and sports. If I could only turn back the hands of time.....

Travel is also a convenience for me. It's just a 10mins bus ride. woot. Just don't understand why the government had to have 2 universities situated at the far end of Singapore. It is just not a smart move. Maybe it's because that demand exceeds supply and we have no choice but to travel if we want to study. On my way back on bus 72, a couple were having fun right in front of me. Watching them brighten up my mood seeing them playing senseless games. Maybe it's because I'm in the season. LOL.... That girl looks like Huiling from a certain angle... I think her smile is just too sweet for one to ignore.

Great to clear one papers. Two more to go. Jiayou!!! Before I forget, I really had to thank Jean for helping me so much for BioInfo. I owe her a lot. Will repay her by being her extras in her video making tomorrow.

Just 2 more papers left. Friday 11pm and I will be free like a bird. Maybe not, still need to go back to school for FYP. But still its better than having to prepare for papers =).

Collecting StanChart Race Pack

It is really shock to see such a long queue when I reach Hall603 to collect my race pack. D***! Why all Singaporeans are so kiasu. I had to head over to the information counter as I forgot to print some form from the Internet. It turn out to be a good thing instead and I cut the queue all the way to the front. Haha.... Heaven really takes care of me. They are really well organized and while waiting, I observed that there are quite a few woman in the race and right behind me is a Ah Pek. Please don't overtake me hor. There's quite a few pretty ones. Hmmm... Really got to respect them for joining the full marathon. As a newbie myself, I aim only to finish the race. I got reminded by Nicole that 2Dec is also the entrepreneur meeting. I only hope my body can make it over there to join you all. No guarantee though.

It took me 20 mins to get my race pack. I think it's very efficient of them(partly because I cut queue). I got myself a black Adidas Shirt with orange stripe at a 20% discount. The variety is limited though. I was approached to fill up some survey by AC Nielson in exchange for a bag. It took me 10 mins to fill up. Very very long survey. The bag is nice but got the logo of AC Nielson... something something dot com. Haha seems like they want be to advertise their brand also. Smart move!!!

Collecting my race pack. Got some cute gals at the counter
Run my own race. The time is now waiting for me.... Just Whack It.
Can't believe there's so many peeps that like to torture themselves. Just remind me of Adventure Trail Challenge. Missing Neo, Joseph and Huiling especially.
Very tempted to join this leh.... Haha maybe I'm still a child at heart
Anyone to run with me? So that I won't have to do it ALONE. Hee

Pirates of the Silicon Valley

No, it has nothing to do with Johnny Depp. Brace yourself for 90mins of showdown between Bill Gates and Steve Jobs. See how they steal from each others. Damn exciting if I'm in their shoes. And *** exercise is bad for health. LOL

New looks of NYP

It is really refreshing to be back in NYP again. There's quite a few changes here and there. But overall it's getting better and better. Just wondering if NTU is going to do a better job than that. Poly student is having a better life with better facilities. Hopefully the new building is going to be better than that. After all, we have paid so much for school fees and we really deserve better facilities.

New look in Library
How I wish we have a cafe in LWN library, where we can sip a cup of cappucina and dwell in the equations and chunks of text in our notes.

The Garden

Some of my friend has complained that NTU is way too cramp. Every where you see bricks and concrete. It'd really be nice if there's a garden to walk around. Nope. Not that Nanyang Garden. It's waaay toooo faaar.

New look at Mac
Comparing to our canteen, sigh, canteen A is beaten flat down. This canteen is way too good, with the plug and connection to keep user in the canteen.

Koufu taking over FJ
It is really different! Koufu has make it looks like it's not a school canteen at all. NYP students really having a good life in there.

Sunshine Aftermath

Seems like after Singapore Government investigation on Sunshine Empire hasn't affect both my friend, Charlene and Yonghui, very much. Instead, they seems even happier for this to happen. Previously, they even mention it's a good sign. Still trying to figure out why they are so positive about it. Maybe, I will probe them for the answer once exam is over.

Economic Recession Coming Soon?

It's been quite some time since the sub-prime crisis swept through the world, world economies have been greatly affected. And it's not going to end soon! Bank like Citi is punished and many others are holding steadfastly to their reserve. Bernanke reacted by cutting down interest rate but it is only a short term solution(where another cut has already been made). There will always be a limit as to how much interest rate Federal is going to cut.

With the rising inflation and oil price(currently $95/barrel; going to reach $100/barrel), consumers are force to budget. Reading from some other report, consumers have also tighten up their pockets, which means spending even lesser for this festive season. This downward spiral is going to affect the economy BADLY. Not only this other economy has also been affected by it. Even in Singapore, people have been urging us to lower our standard of living. Importing and exporting market is going to be affected badly and this means China is not spared. USA economy is showing signs of slowing down(or maybe it's already starting), it is just a matter of time this problem will snowball. Even European countries are struggling to keep their economy afloat.

Furthermore, if the problem between Iran and Israel is not ironed out soon, USA may have to intervene if war broke out(though I think it's quite impossible they will send troops over since they are already stretched for Iraq). But whatever, the case, oil prices will shoot up, affecting those not in war. Venezuela's president Chavez has just made a statement that oil price may break past $200/barrel if war really break out.

History had shown that a crisis will happen once every decade(though I'm still trying to convince myself). The very last one is 1997 Asia Financial Crisis. I think its time for investor to exercise caution. Many may think China robust and thriving economy is thought to alleviate the effect of sub-prime problem. But they've forgotten that China is a export country where it does not has enough consumer if other country cut down on the export. Many goods will get stuck in the inventory and soon enough, their only way out is to declare bankruptcy. China's market has been going too hot and a lot a lot more China companies have been over-valued and this just remind me of the dot-com bubble in 2000(another deja-vu?). In addition, history had also shown that country hosting Olympics often suffer economic backlash as many people will be unemployed once the event is over. There have been quite a few articles talking about economic recession will start once Beijing Olympics is over.

I also have the feeling that Google share is simply over-valued. They are now valued at USD$633/share and at a 49 P/E!!! What's more, many investor is confident that it will reach USD1000/share, which is simply crazy. Even though they are making pretty good acquisition as well as making waves with product like Android or supposedly Gphone, but their business model hinges on having advertisers to keep them afloat. Problem is if people are really not willing to spend money, advertiser will cut back on their spending and it will be hard to maintain that kind of revenue to show their investor. I've been using Google products daily and is a huge fan of Google Reader(currently with over 70++ rss feeds), but it just doesn't convince me to invest(anyway I'm too poor to even get a share from Google) in the current situation.

BUT I really hope my prediction WILL NOT come true. As a final year student, I will be graduating next June and I really don't want to end up graduating without a job. For peeps out there, it's time to save more. CASH IS KING(for now). It's going to be a great time "shopping" for good stocks when most people out there go into frenzy selling, driving the market to unrealistic cheap price.

According to my friend, Warren Buffet is also dumping shares from China. Seems like he's telling us China market is too hot.

p.s: I'm not a economic student. Not a investor. Just a poor poor student. This article is just base on my perception.

Sexy Mac Beautiful Song

Imagine having James Blunt to sing Mac Is Beautiful? How about changing the singer to a hot Asian babe. She got a great voice and really a eye candy! But I guess she must be damn free to come out with this clip also. Thanks BB(I don't know who are you yet!!!) for recommending this clip.

CASE gets 9 enquiries on Sunshine Empire

I am very tempted to give my opinion on the Sunshine Empire case. However, I am still holding my judgement back partly because I have friends working in SE. I just got the feeling it's not going to work out. It's either the government relent and give SE the license to operate or it's going to be doom case for SE.

The companies attracted so many people because of its investment scheme, which is unique in Singapore. Only through this avenue can the companies get enough profit to repay their partners(MLMers). This is only my 5 cents worth of opinion though. Comments are welcome.

Wonder if Huimin is affected by it. Update me if you have any inside news. In any case, happy birthday to you. You're one year wiser(older) and wish you well for exam.

Articles extracted from CNA
SINGAPORE: The Consumers Association of Singapore (CASE) has received nine enquiries to date on Sunshine Empire, the multi-level marketing firm that hit the news for its controversial business practices.

On Tuesday, the Commercial Affairs Department (CAD) launched an investigation into the firm.

But that does not seem to have any major effect on the company. Its members were still streaming into the firm's head office at Toa Payoh Hub.

Many continued to avoid the media but the few who told Channel NewsAsia that they had invested small sums said they were not too worried.

Meanwhile, CASE president Seah Seng Choon said enquiries received on the company centred around its credibility and whether it was safe to invest in it.

CASE reminded consumers that they have to make their own checks as Sunshine Empire is not regulated.

However, CASE added that it has not received any formal complaints. - CNA/ir

Female Condom

Found this really interesting article from NYT. This is the first time I hear of a condom for female. If this become really popular then it would come a time for guys to put on for the gals =). According to the article it's gong to be better(meaning the feel) and guy won't be able to notice the difference whether it's put on or not. So it must be good news for all couples out there. Watch out Durex!

I'm still figuring out how it's used.... Will it be more protective than condom. Seems like its quite easy to leak.

Extracted from NYT
The female condom has never caught on in the United States. But in the third world, where it was introduced in the late 1990s, public health workers hoped it would overthrow the politics of the bedroom, empower women and stop the AIDS epidemic in its tracks.

It did not. Female condoms never really caught on there, either.

Only about 12 million female condoms are delivered each year in poor countries, compared with about 6 billion male condoms. Couples complained that the female version was awkward, unsightly, noisy and slippery — or, as Mitchell Warren, who was one of its earliest champions, now says, “the yuck factor was a problem.” Many women tried it, but in the end, it was adopted mainly by prostitutes.

Now scientists are trying again. A new design — much the same at one end, different at the other — has been developed, and its makers hope it will succeed where its predecessor failed.

Maxtor Personal Storage 3200 drives ship with virus

Extracted from DailyTechRag

If you've purchased a Maxtor Personal Storage 3200 unit within the last three months, you might want to batten down the hatches. Turns out, an unspecified number of the units managed to get infected with the Virus.Win32.AutoRun.ah file before leaving the hands of a Seagate sub-contractor in China. To find out if you have one of the affected units, call up Seagate and give them your serial number.

A Long Day in JB

Morning

Dunnoe why after sleeping only 4 hours still feeling so awake. Normally, I would just turn off the alarm and get back to dreamland. Well well, I must be still feeling too excited of getting all the rss on my google reader. Suppose to run 30km on the treadmill but just can't make it in 3 hour time for my meeting with friends to discuss the BioInfo paper.

Noon
Went to ER lab to find Jean but can't find her there. Maybe she's already celebrating her birthday, which is tomorrow. Spend quite some time going through the answer. Got some pretty good links from Leonghui and Co for explaining parts of lesson taught by Lee Jin Yan. Needa thanks them for making the whole thing so clear to me. Sometimes, it ain't that the lesson is difficult, just that it needs more technique by the professor.

However, due to "time constraint", I had to leave the school for JOHOR BAHRU. Peeps must be thinking I'm crazy to go for JB in the midst of exam. But ok lar, it's just a bridge away right?

I think it's pretty safe in City Square so I really dunnoe whats the fuss about. No worry la, though it ain't that safe in JB but as long as you blend in with the people there, they won't be able to spot you. I'm pretty good at that and that makes me a good scout. Sheesh....

First thing first is to get a haircut at REDs. For peeps who dunnoe, you can get get a professional haircut at only RM25. That's only S$12.50!!! But this is only after you ask for a student discount so remember to bring your student card.

The next thing to do is none other than eat!!! Almost every-time, I would go for Kim Gary HK Cafe. It's located at the basement. Nice furnishing and ambience and you get a variety of food to choose that makes you headache. Well its a good thing. I would go there to try out different food but almost every month they had new menu. So I don't think I will be able to try finish every dish. I had my stomach full, its very full LOL.
Nice ambience for a cafe

Look, they're doing table advertisment

Bosch soup for appetizer

And a slice of yummy french toast

Here comes the main meal - the bowl is hot!!!

Manage to clear my plates after 40 mins

most importantly, a 20% discount for student. hooray
Evening
On my way back(around 7pm), I was quite stun cos I thought you wont get traffic jam traveling out from JB to SG. Well it took me 15 mins instead of the usual 5 mins. Guess it's still aint that bad. Looking at the opposite traffic, it makes me feel much better. As usual the traffic jammed all the way from Woodlands. Woot! Back home, it's time for a good rest. I'm also praying that Jean will be back in school. Please don't leave me alone.....

Now, I'm having problem with uploading of photos. Seems like the connection has become really unstable. Just one more day before I will make a complain to Singtel. Just one more...

Trouble getting your own Christian name

Just found a great website that sort Christian name by region(too bad its within USA). At least, it solve me the headache of thinking of a Christian name myself. It's integrated with Google Mashup and there you can view names by region and explore the popular name for that region. Enjoy finding your own Christian name!

I've signed up for PPP. Have you?

It's been quite a while since I last signed up for payperpost. PPP allows me to blog and at the same time earn some moolah out of it. At least, I will now blog about things that I like and not succumb to the pressure of moolah itself. Cannot be too commercial else will piss people off.

When comparing with NuffNang and Adervlets, the two other major internet ads companies in Singapore, PayPerPost offers a unique way of earning moolah from advertising by writing post of product that you like. In this way, you were much in control of the advertisement running in your blog. On top of this reason, unless your a famous blogger, it is very difficult for you to generate the amount of clicks to earn a fair sum of running ads in your blog. And hence, PPP is definitely the right choice for you.

Setting up PayPerPost is fairly simple. Create an account, register your blog and send them your banking information. It's that simple! Google ads has not been sending me any moolah yet. Hopefully, by joining PPP, it will earn me more moolah to finance my trip to USA.

Heard from Nicole that getting your own domain is even better, with less restriction. Ruiping heard that, I will get service from you as promised. Gimme some time. That's all I know about PayPerPost and really hope I can get a good experience out of it.

It's a car. No it's a plane. No, it's a flying car

Fount this interesting article from NYT. Basically it is about a car that is able to fly. Omg this is going to be like what is shown in the movie. And it also means that in the future all drivers need to take both car and plane license in order to own a automobile. Ruiping and Nicole I think it's time to get your plane license soon.

Article extracted from NYT

It might sound like a scene straight out of the Jetsons, but a Massachusetts company is developing a small airplane that can land, fold up its wings and drive down the highway.

Terrafugia Inc., a company founded three years ago by graduates from the Massachusetts Institute of technology (MIT), is in the process of building a prototype of The Transition, a 19-foot, two-seater the company describes as a roadable light-sport aircraft. And it's focused on building something that can take to the roads as easily as it takes to the skies.

"We're not going to have a flying car, as people think of it, for a while," said Anna Dietrich, chief operating officer of the Woburn, Mass.-based company. "I would never say it's not going to happen, but today the infrastructure is not there, nor is the training, nor are the avionics that would make the training unnecessary... What makes sense right now is a roadable aircraft."

Dietrich said the idea of a such a vehicle, which has an anticipated price of US$148,000, is what fired up their imaginations and pushed them to found the company. The problem, however, is that the U.S. doesn't have the infrastructure in place to make roadable planes a viable alternative yet. There are roads, not runways, in front of houses, grocery stores and office buildings. And a sky filled with people who don't have pilot's licenses could be problematic.

"You have to be a pilot to fly The Transition," said Dietrich. "And we just really don't have the technology to have an autopilot built in so people can just get in it and say, 'Fly me to the grocery store.' It's an airplane designed to be flown by a pilot in the infrastructure we already have, which is the airports."

She added that there are about 6,000 public airports in the U.S., and most people are, on average, within 20 miles of one. The idea, she said, is to take advantage of this under-utilized infrastructure. A pilot can fly into a small airport, and instead of getting a rental car or waiting for a taxi to drive out to a rather remote spot, he or she can fold up the wings on the aircraft and simply drive off.

Foldable wings, though, may not give some passengers a feeling of safety when they're 10,000 feet in the air. Dietrich said making sure the wings stay erect while in the flight was one of their biggest design challenges.

"We tackled that one first," she added. "There are a number of interlocks in place, some electrical, some mechanical. To activate the mechanism that folds or deploys the wings, you have to be on the ground. There are sensors that tell the plane if you are on the ground. The engine also needs to be off. And you have to enter a personal identification number that only the pilot knows... We built a lot of safety mechanisms into this."

Terrafugia executives expect the prototype to be completed sometime in 2008 and the first production model to be delivered in 2009. Dietrich said once they're in the manufacturing phase, they'll slowly ramp up to full-scale production by 2011 or 2012. Dietrich noted that they've received advanced orders for 30 to 50 Transitions already.

How do Manipulators act

This is one article that really bring my interest from DLM. You get manipulated in school, work and in fact anywhere so that they get their things done and take all the credit. I happen to had this experience before and only come to my realization when some helpful soul tipping me on what this person is always doing. It's really pissed when this person is making use of others and others still think he's a great great buddy. Needless to say, peeps need to open their eyes bigger and for me, I got so used to the antics of that guy that I basically just heck-care about it. I think it ain't really nice to make use of your friends to achieve your goals. Well just hope that they can realize that what they see is just a facade. Back to topic, below is a list of how manipulators behave when they want to get their things done.

Manipulators Act Differently Toward You When They Want Something

Watch for sudden changes in the way that a requester (a potential manipulator, someone who wants you to help them for selfish purposes) behaves toward you:

  • They compliment you more often (assuming they ever did), particularly with regards to your valuable skills, knowledge and experience.
  • You suddenly become this person's “buddy”, “pal” or “friend”. They might use your first or last names more often than normal. The requester smiles at you more often, but the smile never reaches their eyes.
  • They seem interested in what you are doing. However, these are often shallow expressions of interest followed by impatience and rapid shift of subject or attention. Manipulators are always looking for opportunities and can be distracted rather easily.
  • They seem eager to please you. You'll get the occasional gift or freebie from a manipulator. Just remember that a manipulator is too smart or cheap to invest a lot of money in you at this point, so they probably didn't pay for the gifts.
  • The requester makes public expressions of support and need for you. Can you say “flattery”?

This positive behavior ceases after you are no longer needed or useful. If they are looking for long term help from you, the good times may roll on for some time.

Waiting for Leopard

For the past few days, I've been visiting NTU CITS website. Wondering is the upgrade for MacBook from Tiger to Leopard ready? Anyone got any idea?

Can Garden by the Bay bring in $1B over 10 years?

I'm pretty skeptical by the fact that we can bring $1B to Singapore by some attraction like errr garden? This means that for each year, we had to earn some $100m from the garden. This garden ain't Jurassic Park and it's not going to draw intense interest for tourist to come to Singapore. Peeps like me like to visit the Niagara Falls, Pyramid, Great Wall of China and Great Barrier Reef. Those places are the real deal and would be a wonderful experience to visit them. But errr some garden? I'm really scratching my head. But since it's the government plan, I still hope that this will be successful and draw in moolah from tourist. As a small country, we had always been supporting ourselves and the government has never really disappoint us right?

Here's the report extract from Channelnewsasia.com
SINGAPORE: National Development Minister Mah Bow Tan on Friday unveiled details of a S$900 million plan to turn Marina South into a lush Eden.

At the groundbreaking ceremony, Mr Mah said the Gardens at Marina South is set to be a major tourist attraction, bringing in 2.7 million more visitors each year.

Tourism receipts are also expected to reach some S$1 billion over the next ten years, due to flagship events like the Singapore Garden Festival.

Gardens at Marina South is the first phase of a masterplan to create three of such gardens on prime waterfront land in the heart of the Central Business District, to help place Singapore in the same league as other global cities like New York and London.

Dr Tan Wee Kiat, Advisor to NParks, Project Director of Gardens by the Bay, said: "The other senses will come into play – smell, sound... and we will feature this in garden design, which is not often done in gardens in this part of the world. By nightfall, most of us just leave, but here we want people to stay."

Apart from 'Cooled Conservatories' where flora from cooler climates will be displayed, visitors can also expect to see some 'SuperTrees' – tall skeletal structures on which climbing plants will grow.

The Gardens will also be a showcase of energy-efficient technologies as water from the Bay will be recycled to be used in the park.

The 54-ha development, which is expected to be completed by 2010, will also have space for retail shops and events.

Mr Mah said the world-class city garden will add value to the surrounding real estate, but added that it is not all about numbers.

He said: "I'm sure somebody would come up and say, 'Look, if you had put apartments and offices on this land, you would have created more value!' But is this what we want? Is this what Singapore is all about?"

The two other parks – one at Marina East and the other at Marina Centre – will be built at a later date.

A water-sports area will be built at Marina East, while a park will be incorporated into the Formula One circuit at Marina Centre.

Camp in NYP . Struggling with Bio Info . Last Copy of Business2.0

A long long day but didn't do much because the paper for BioInfo is just too difficult. Spend most of my time flipping through the notes to find the slides for something substantial. I went back to NYP to study for exam because I had to get rid of all the distraction like my bed, laptop and my sister watching hk drama whole day long.

And for those who don't know, NYP library is a good place to camp and study. A lot of NTU, SIM and SMU student is always spotted around during the exam period. Din see any NUS peeps though. And if anyone happen to see me, come forward and say hi, don't be afraid by my stern look. Cos I'm really friendly and kindhearted. Nicole and Ruiping and Ridz can vouch for that =).

Back to BioInfo, yah it's really tough having to finish 1.25 paper in 8 hours. Sigh, gotta hound Jean again. Sorry about it but hopefully you(Jean) will be in school on Monday. Please don't avoid me =(. It's just damn tiring having to complete a paper itself. Even if the exam is open-book, it wont really help much, perhaps only lighten the load of not having to memorize the formulas.

I camp there till 1730 before leaving. For anyone camping in NYP, 1730 is the sacred number cos it's the time when the door will only be activated with the student card. Without the card, you will be trapped in the library and for once my friend and I had to talk to the students to get out.

So from NYP, I took a trip down to Orchard. Haha, all mugging and no play makes me a dull boy. With the 40% discount off for Borders, I really had to go down once to take a look at the new books. Anyone wanna have the discount just find the post about borders discount. For extra 10%, you need to get the card from me.

As expected, when I reach Borders, there's no more copy of Business2.0 around in the shelf. So lucky to get it last week, when there's only 3 copies around. It's a really good magazine with very nice introduction to disrupting technologies and business around the world.

For those close to me and wanted to lay your hand on it, ask me and promise to take good care of my books. Cos I really treat each and every book like my baby. Whats more, this is the final issue of Business2.0 and which means they're not publishing this magazine anymore. Furthermore, it's a Collector's Item.

Just halfway there

Really surprise I can wake up early in the morning to travel to school to exercise. I've been sleeping till 10 before I can wake up for the past few days and the weather is just too good to do anything else but to sleep. However with exam coming up and I cannot waste my time away sleeping.

There's only a 2 guys when I stepped into the gym. I focus my mind to complete 3 hrs of running(approx 30km) so as to train up for the full marathon in Dec. Can't help getting nervous as the race date draws nearer. Remind myself of my motto, Just Whack, I concentrate on running . Until 20 mins later, a lady step onto the treadmill and start running. Even though, I'm without glasses(600 degree shortsighted) but she looks quite cute to me. She's around 1.6m with pony tail. Maybe I caught the "in the season" disease from Ruiping, I can't just help laughing at it as I continue to run. *meow. Seen her quite a few times and maybe will approach her when I see her in gym again. Any suggestion how to go about approaching her?

Finally finish Bio Info revision. Thanks Jean

Sigh.... It has really been tough on my brain cell for the past few days. Don't know how many millions have died for past 3 days. Life has not been made easy with lecturer that just go through the slides with explaining and sometime it's really hard when we had to try really hard to even understanding what language they are talking. I slogged through days and night to figure out what each slide is really about. What's worst is having slides of website (lots and lots of it).... Arrrgh do I have to remember the web page also. Cannot be right?

What's the most fortunate thing for me is having a expert just behind me. And guess who's that person? It's Jean from Simply Jean (hmmm rhyme quite well). So goddamn lucky to have her guidance and really grateful for her answering all my doubts, even though she is trying to "fail" us. Really have to treat her something nice after my papers. Thanks Jean not being so patient and understanding, to really treat me as JC kids by explaining with all those layman terms. If not because of her, most probably I will still be stuck at chapter one.

Never fight with a woman

After reading the report on the women winning the car with 77hrs, almost 4 more hours than the guy, it is really amazing in the perspective of woman's ability to endure pain. It has been scientifically proven that woman can endure much more pain than guy. Maybe it's a god gift for woman who needs to go through the pain of giving birth. So this explains why my mom can nag for hours with feeling tired with her mouth and her ability to shop and shop and shop without feeling tired either. Thinking back, it has been many many years since I last shop with her or maybe the fear of shopping with her still struck my heart, when even I'm a recce.

Becoming an entrepreneur

Just received the newsletter from business week featuring best young entrepreneur for 2007. Just by looking through the list makes me wanna be like one of them. There's always a gap between where I am now and where I want to be.

I often get peeps discouraging from taking this path or even think it's not possible for me to do it. But hopefully the collaboration with Ridzuan will work out so that I can further my dream of doing what i like to do most and at the same time helping those in needs.

Thinking back, Miss Lim, my geography teacher from Xinmin secondary, is really entrepreneurial. Imagine a frail-looking woman travel to different country to teach the children in Nepal and building school for children in Mongolia. She really has had the impact in me even so many years later and I just feel so small when compared to what she has done.

Really really miss her. Wondering where is she currently?
